"I've been riding an Octos for a year now - I take it to festivals, civic events, corporate groups, schools and weddings. The Octos is a mobile party - every time I take it out I feel I am giving and receiving joy. All sorts of people climb on board, but the reaction is always the same: they are amazed and delighted. It's like an amusement park ride that has broken loose from its moorings and is rolling down the street. I love to watch the riders smiling, and the expressions of surprise on the faces of passers-by. It's a carefree ride for the passengers: they're pedalling, but someone else is steering. They feel secure and comfortable. They realise they are sharing something wonderful, and this starts some great conversations, even among strangers." Hans Josso, Amsterdam
The Octos from Staller Studio is a futuristic tricycle for up to seven riders sitting in a circle. Since its introduction in Encycleopedia 4, artist and inventor Eric Staller has devoted a year to research and development. He has come up with a completely new transmission: a chain-drive system that has improved the efficiency many-fold. The steering and handling have been drastically improved, simply by moving from four to three wheels. The Octos now can U-turn in its own length (240cm). The rider in charge of the steering is now at the back, rather than out in front as on the first Octos, excluded from the circle. This more inclusive arrangement strengthens the togetherness of the crew. Made of steel tubing with an automotive finish, the Octos has motorcycle wheels and disc brakes. It weighs approximately 100 kilos.
