Dynamos may revolve, but a revolution in dynamos has been a long time in coming. The LightSPIN dynamo, from Dynosys AG in Switzerland, could be the first of a new generation. The LightSPIN is a bottle dynamo that uses a new, patented layout for the magnets and offers previously unheard-of performance. The generator efficiency is around 95%, and with microchip-controlled management electronics the dynamo regulates its output to exactly 6.2V, whatever your speed, eliminating the problem of bulbs blowing on fast descents. Overall efficiency is around 80%. The system provides full voltage at only 7.5km/h (4.5mph).
The pedal power required to run the dynamo is only 4.5 watts, a manyfold improvement on conventional bottle dynamos, and better even than any hub dynamo. Excess power is simply not generated, resulting in a dynamo that draws the same, minimum power virtually independent of speed. The LightSPIN is available with a built-in nickel metal hydride (NiMH) backup battery. The charging and discharging of this reserve power is handled by the electronics, and the result is a light that stays on, at full power, for up to 45 minutes after you've stopped the bike. The light will automatically cut out after 4 minutes stationary - though you can just roll the bike a little to switch it back on.
This full-power backup light is a revelation to those weaned on traditional dynamos: the ability to read maps, put up tents or mend a puncture with the dynamo providing the power could free many cycle tourists from the need to carry a separate, battery-powered torch. If you have a LightSPIN without the backup facility, it can be easily added with a separate upgrade kit. The LightSPIN is designed to be compatible with existing front and rear lamp units.
