Step 'n Go Cycles
Why do pedals go round? Pedalling constrains the legs to move in an unchanging circle, which can be a difficult or impossible motion for many people. Happily, there is an alternative. The Step 'n Go is completely different. The rider stands on two flat non-slip treadles, supported by the seat if necessary. To propel the vehicle, the rider shifts his or her weight from one foot to the other in a natural, stepping action. The treadles are linked so that as one falls in the power stroke, the other rises. The patented treadle transmission converts any movement into forward motion, no matter whether the strokes are short, long or uneven. It's a motion more akin to walking than cycling.

The upright position combines body weight with muscle strength, requiring very little effort to move the cycle. With two wheels in front, the rider is within the 'triangle of safety', and a companion or therapist can walk alongside the rider, unlike on a conventional tricycle. A wide range of speeds are possible, from barely-moving to fast enough to excite the adventurous rider. This makes it suitable for the cautious new rider in controlled settings, as well as great fun for the more skilled. Many adaptations are available, including range-of-motion adjusters, enhanced leverage treadles, lower gearing, and a selection of seating options. Custom adaptations are available on consultation.

The Step 'n Go is being successfully ridden by people of all ages and abilities, including those with cerebral palsy, arthrogryposis, strokes, spina bifida, arthritis, head injuries, hip, and knee or other joint replacements. Youngsters with Down's syndrome or developmental delay enjoy using the bike, improving their co-ordination, balance and motor skills. All riders can use the strength and abilities they have to gain freedom and mobility, and many find that their capabilities improve greatly over time.

The Step 'n Go cycle celebrates the best of universal design, breaking down the barriers between able-bodied and disabled riders. Many enlightened physiotherapists and rehabilitation specialists now recommend the Step 'n Go. It's also proved a great hit with able-bodied riders who prefer the treadle motion, and realise that for the same price as a decent stair-stepper, they can get a high-quality cycle to really go places!
