You can enjoy some bikes for their intricacies and design complexities. Others can charm by their elegant simplicity. The Strida's simplicity is its strength.
It's designed for short trips up to five miles (8km), and to be instantly available whenever you need extra mobility. That means minimising the disincentives to taking a folding bike with you, and making the folding and unfolding process as fast and easy as possible.
The Strida 2 achieves these design goals with calculated elegance. The frame is minimalist: just three rustproof aluminium tubes connected by three plastic joints. Folding or unfolding is extremely quick, taking just four or five seconds with practice. The two wheels clip together and the bike can then be easily pulled or pushed along by the stem, so there's usually no need to lift it. If you do have to, it weighs just 22lb (under 10kg). A toothed belt drive avoids the dirt and maintenance problems of a chain, and twin hub brakes give reliable low-maintenance braking in all weathers.
For short distances, there's no need for gears, and the Strida's 54" gear is comfortable up to a speed of around 10mph (16km/h).
The steering is a very direct, with the short wheelbase, but this also makes the bike very manoeuvrable. Within a few minutes the Strida 2 becomes as simple to ride as it is to fold. The saddle is easily moved up and down the rear tube to adjust for leg-length. High-pressure 16" (305) Vredestein tyres with reflective side-walls give low rolling resistance. The wheels are mounted from one side only, so puncture repair is simple. The Strida 2 comes with a rear rack which can carry up to 30lb (13.4kg), and a range of accessories are available, including mudguards in a variety of colours, lights, a special saddle bag, and a large stowage bag to cover the folded bike.
